Linux Games FAQ

  • Problems with OpenAL.
  • Check your /etc/openalrc file. This file should contain several lines, for example:
    (define devices '(alsa)
    (define alsa-out-device "default")

You can also create ~/.openalrc file for specific user.
  • How to get OpenAL to use a particular device.
  • To get OpenAL to use a particular ALSA device, put these in your ~/.openalrc
-- To get OpenAL to use dmix plugin:
    (define devices '(alsa))
    (define alsa-out-device "plug:dmix")

-- To get OpenAL to use ESD:
    (define devices '(esd))

  • The game crashes at start, no game log info available in the terminal.
  • This issue could be connected to DRI open source video drivers and xorg 7+. You could use the "--noAA" game launch option.
  • At the game start entire X session crashes.
  • Looks like game can't detect right resolution or can't switch xorg to another resolution by some reason. You could use "--mode=N" game launch option with your current resolution (in this way, game will not change xorg state at all). Look at RedMe.txt file for more info.
